Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) Accreditation

Nursing Accreditation Overview

Every state has a different policy for licensing and governing the nursing profession, with specific guidelines for the licensed practical nurse (LPN) or licensed vocational nurse (LVN) profession. It is very important to research the requirements of the state or states where you expect to practice. At a minimum, you need to graduate from an LPN nurse education program that is approved in your state, as well as pass a national licensing exam.

Most states require accreditation by a nationally recognized accrediting body as a baseline for approving a nursing education program. When you are researching potential nursing programs—especially online programs—be sure to find out if they are accredited. You will usually see this information displayed prominently in the program's website or marketing material, but it's a good idea to double check. You can be sure that this extra effort is worthwhile. You certainly don't want to waste a year of your life studying in a program that isn't recognized by the state where you want to practice!

Nursing Accreditation Institutes

The US Secretary of Education recognizes two non-governmental institutes as official accreditation organizations for nursing education programs:

However, the CCNE only offers accreditation to baccalaureate and graduate programs. Therefore, most LPN programs pursue accreditation through NLNAC, which accredits clinical doctorate, masters, baccalaureate, associate, diploma and practical nursing education programs.

Accreditation is a voluntary, self-regulatory process. That means that nursing programs must choose to seek accreditation and proactively demonstrate that they meet or exceed the accrediting organization's standards and criteria for educational quality. Committees of experienced volunteers who teach and practice nursing develop these standards as a 'seal of approval' for an effective LPN education.

Benefits of Attending an Accredited LPN School

Accreditation organizations pay close attention to state governments and health departments. They know what is required to practice as an LPN nurse in each state. Therefore, state laws may change, but attending an accredited school will usually ensure that you meet the basic criteria to practice as a licensed practical nurse. Attending an accredited LPN school also increases your chance of getting an LPN job and improves your occupational mobility. If you need to move, you'll have an easier time getting a license in a new state.

In summary, attending an accredited school guarantees that you will receive a quality education and safeguards your future success.
