Trained as nursing experts whose ultimate goal is to improve patient care, clinical nurse specialists have a broad range of career options.

Along with other advanced practice nurses, clinical nurse specialists typically focus on one of many nursing specialties, such as acute care nursing, cardiovascular nursing or neonatal nursing. They may further narrow their career expertise to the treatment of a particular disease, such as diabetes; type of care, such as wound care; or to the optimization of care in a specific medical environment, such as the emergency room.

Clinical nurse specialists most often work in hospitals or long-term care facilities, but may also serve as independent consultants or work for a variety of health care agencies and organizations.
