Oregon Health & Science University

As part of its multifaceted public mission, Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) strives for excellence in education, research, clinical practice, scholarship and community service. The University is dedicated to educating the next generation of health and high-technology professionals, scientists and environmental engineers for leadership in their fields.

While OHSU's primary education units are the Schools of Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing and Science & Engineering, its training extends beyond the 100-acre Marquam Hill campus in Portland to every corner of the state.

OHSU facilities include:

  • Two hospitals
  • Numerous primary care and specialty clinics
  • Research institutes and centers
  • Interdisciplinary centers
  • Community service programs

Classrooms take many forms: the traditional schoolroom, a practitioner's office in rural Oregon or in the inner city, a biomedical research laboratory or a home for the elderly. The University's services provide a rich environment for clinical and research experiences for students who work side-by-side with clinicians as well as scientists.

Our Bachelor of Science (BS) with a major in nursing program is a full-time, 3-year program in which students take classes and work with nurse preceptors in clinical settings with varying hours and schedules. The program requires the completion of 180 quarter credits - 87 credits of non-nursing courses (45 of which are prerequisite courses) and 93 credits in the nursing major.

Following graduation, graduates are eligible to take the National Council Licensing Examination (NCLEX) and the State Board examination for registered nurse licensure. This program is offered at each of our statewide campuses: Ashland, Klamath Falls, La Grande and Portland.

RN-to-BS

Designed for working registered nurses, our RN-to-BS program is available statewide through four campuses. Each student works with a faculty adviser to develop a program of study. Although program length will vary depending upon the student's previous education and the number of credits taken each quarter, the program can be completed in 2 years on a part-time status.

Accelerated Bachelor of Science with a major in Nursing (ABS)

The Accelerated Bachelor of Science with a major in Nursing (ABS) program is designed specifically for people who already have an accredited bachelor's degree in non-nursing field but are wishing to earn their BS with a major in Nursing. Applicants must complete 28 quarter credit hours of prerequisite courses.

Once admitted, students will complete a generalist nursing curriculum that is comprised of 5 quarters or 15 months of full-time nursing course work including both didactic and clinical rotations. The BS degree is awarded at the successful completion of the undergraduate course work, and graduates are eligible to take the National Council Licensing Examination (NCLEX).

This program will prepare the graduate for RN licensure and will also give interested students the necessary credentials to pursue a graduate degree in nursing.

Accelerated Bachelor of Science-to-Master's

The Accelerated Bachelor of Science to Master's (ABS-to-Master's) program is designed to allow those students with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BS) with a major other than nursing to take the nursing courses required to get a BS with a major in nursing and then continue into the master-level courses that are required to achieve a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner or certified nurse midwifery Master of Science (MS) or Master of Nursing (MN) degree.

Students on this track are accepted to either the nurse midwifery or psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner program and will start that course work after completing the required courses necessary to achieve the BS degree and pass the nursing licensure exam.

This 3-year program begins with a 5-quarter, full-time course of study in the undergraduate program, beginning summer term. At the completion of the Bachelor of Science Nursing curriculum, the BS degree is awarded and graduates are eligible for professional registered nurse licensing examinations. The graduate program course work begins following completion of the BS degree and nursing licensure exam (NCLEX) in the fall term.

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)

The field of nursing is ever changing, and the role of the nurse is expanding into new leadership roles and clinical arenas. In order to keep pace with the changing scope of practice, the DNP degree program will help nurses expand their knowledge and increase their understanding of policy, systems, economics, evaluation, and the need for greater translation of research into practice.

The post-master's DNP program is designed to enhance the role of the practicing clinician. The post-baccalaureate program is designed to train and expand nurses into the advanced practice nurse role. As a graduate of this practice-focused doctoral degree program, both tracks will allow the graduate to examine the health system you currently work in and support the career trajectory for those pursuing expert clinical practice and leadership.
