University of Tennessee, a research extensive university, is a land grant institution that traces its origins to 1794. The main campus, situated on 290 acres near downtown Knoxville, enrolls approximately 265,000 students - 6,000 of whom are graduate students. The University offers a broad array of academic programs in the professions, the arts and the sciences, and many of the faculty are world renowned.

The College of Nursing is an integral part of The University of Tennessee. Its programs are excellent and the faculty are highly skilled teachers, researchers and practitioners.

Facilities at the College of Nursing include a clinical practice laboratory, a learning resource center, and state-of-the art computer laboratories. Students have access to the University's extensive library collection which includes more than two million volumes and a wide range of computerized databases. Six major hospitals in Knoxville provide a variety of clinical practice opportunities for students. Approximately 100 additional practice sites are available throughout the region in community-based clinics, private practices, health departments and schools. International health outreach experiences are also available.

The baccalaureate nursing program has as its central foci persons, health, environment and nursing . The program is based on the belief that nursing has equal concern for the prevention of illness, the promotion of health and the care of the sick. General education courses, nursing courses and electives are organized to promote and develop creative thinking and other cognitive, affective and psychomotor processes that are essential for safe, effective nursing practice and meaningful involvement as a contributing member of society.

A broad base of general education, a thorough study of human behavior, an emphasis on health maintenance, promotion and restoration and a strong family and community orientation are all essential components of the BSN program. Graduates are prepared to (1) assume beginning leadership positions in a variety of settings, (2) work collaboratively with other health professionals, (3) function as socially conscious and contributing citizens and (4) pursue advanced education on either a formal or informal basis.

Master of Science in Nursing

The purpose of the master's program is to prepare leaders, managers and practitioners who facilitate clients' achievement of optimal health in the dynamic health care system. The program prepares advanced practice nurses for careers in adult health nursing, nursing of women and children, mental health nursing, nurse anesthesia, family nurse practitioner and homeland security nursing. The program offers role preparation as nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, and nurse anesthetists. A master's degree in nursing administration is also available. Students may select a thesis or non-thesis option.

Advanced practice nursing involves the delivery of care, management of resources, interdisciplinary collaboration and application of technology, information systems, knowledge and critical thinking. Graduates are prepared to

  • Provide advanced nursing care in a variety of health care settings

  • Utilize theoretical knowledge to guide advanced practice nursing

  • Collaborate in research activities and utilize knowledge gained from research in advanced practice nursing

  • Evaluate health policies and economics related to the delivery of health care

  • Assume roles as leaders and collaborators with other professionals and communities in planning, providing and evaluating health care.

PhD in Nursing

The PhD program focuses on scientific inquiry and theory development and prepares nurses for roles as researchers, educators and administrators.

Students build upon knowledge and clinical competence acquired in previous programs. In addition to core content in nursing theory, research and statistics, course work focuses on leadership in complex systems and health policy. All students select a cognate area of study outside the field of nursing such as anthropology, child and family studies, psychology, education or statistics. An optional preceptorship course offers a field or internship experience in an educational, administrative, clinical or research setting with a doctorally-prepared mentor. Interdisciplinary and international experiences are strongly encouraged and several interdisciplinary research groups involving faculty and doctoral students are ongoing. Two major research foci of the College of Nursing are "enhancing emotional recovery from trauma" and "innovative educational strategies. The College is a Cooperating Site of the International Institute of Qualitative Methodology which boasts only about 100 members across the globe

Each student's program of study is designed to focus on his or her interests and career goals. Small classes encourage close working relationships with faculty. Students are part of an exciting, enthusiastic community of scholars devoted to extending and expanding nursing knowledge. Many collaborative faculty-student projects have resulted in national and international conference presentations, journal articles, book chapters, and books. During their program or shortly thereafter, 100% of our graduates have had a scholarly paper accepted for publication.
