Bachelor of Science in Nursing

The BSN curriculum at USF combines a foundation of liberal arts education with nursing classroom and laboratory training. Your coursework is immediately put to use through extensive clinical experiences in a number of different settings in the Bay Area, from large teaching/research hospitals to community clinics with state-of-the-art facilities and practices. The Nursing curriculum, in both theory and practice, pairs the use of technological advances with exploration of the ethical issues they raise.

Your nursing courses are grouped, so you concurrently enroll in a theory course focused on understanding client conditions and needs, and a clinical course that integrates classroom work within the practice setting. Clinical nursing courses occur in a variety of health care agencies with a major focus on community-based nursing practice.

Health care in the United States has undergone a dramatic transformation in recent years and prompted a major evolution in the roles of nurses. While a historically demanding profession, nursing today is faced with ever-changing obligations and opportunities.

The master’s program at USF prepares two types of individuals to meet today’s challenges in the field of nursing:

  • The practicing nurse who has a baccalaureate degree in nursing or another discipline and
  • The non-nurse, an individual with a baccalaureate degree in another field but who is looking for entry into the nursing profession.

Degree Options include:

MSN in Healthcare Systems Leadership

The MSN in Healthcare Systems Leadership is an exciting and innovative program that prepares nurses to function in a leadership role at all levels in a variety of health care settings. Students have the opportunity to match their knowledge, skills and ability with a specialized area of health care delivery and to plan a career path in a variety of important roles.

Dual MSN/MPA

The Dual Degree MSN/MPA Program in Health Services Administration is designed to prepare nurses to assume leadership roles across the continuum of care in the emerging health care delivery system. The curriculum includes course work that integrates nursing and health services administration to provide students with the opportunity to develop advanced analytical and communication skills.

Dual MSN/MSIS

Taking ethics as a critical starting point, the Dual Degree MSN/MSIS Program in Nursing Informatics trains health information professionals to secure, analyze, manage and integrate medical records and other health information. Specialized courses in information technology and the medical area will prepare graduates to innovate and develop systems that support quality patient care, medical research, health planning, health care evaluation and financial reimbursement for health care institutions.
