About Barry University's Anesthesiology Program

The American Association of Nurse Anesthetists reports that a nurse anesthetist shortage threatens many Americans' access to care. According to a congressionally mandated study (conducted by NIH), more than 6,000 additional nurse anesthetists will be needed by the year 2010, a 40% increase over those currently practicing. Florida ranks in the top three states for job opportunities for graduate nurse anesthetists.

The Master of Science Program in Anesthesiology (MS) at Barry University has been designed for the baccalaureate-prepared registered nurse with critical care experience who wishes to become a nurse anesthetist. It is accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs.

Barry University's program offers over 760 hours of didactic instruction at the master's level. The clinical component includes approximately 3,500 hours of clinical instruction in the art and science of anesthesiology. Clinical experiences enable the graduate students to acquire the specialized knowledge, skills, competence and judgment necessary to assume positions in a variety of settings with clients of all ages. Leadership is developed by fostering involvement in activities that are helping to shape the professional future of nurse anesthetists.

A new class begins each spring semester (January) and the application deadline is May 1st. The anesthesia program will consider early decision for admission for those outstanding candidates who provide all admission requirements by February 1st. You may be contacted for the required individual interview early.

Graduate students participate as associate members in the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists and the Florida Association of Nurse Anesthetists.
