Practical Nursing Diploma

The practical nursing program will provide you with the skills and training to oversee and manage the treatment of individuals. You will gain knowledge of basic nursing and patient care concepts in a classroom and clinical setting.

You will be trained to take vital signs, such as temperature, blood pressure, pulse, and respiration. You will observe patients and report adverse reactions to medications or treatments. You will also collect samples for testing, perform routine laboratory tests, feed patients, and record food and fluid intake.

The practical nursing program is comprised of three levels of learning that encompass theory and hands-on training in the following areas:

1. The first level provides an overview of the individual as a system comprised of physiological, psychological, sociocultural, and spiritual needs, including:

  • Therapeutic communication
  • Pharmacology
  • Nutrition
  • Body structure and function

2. The second level provides an evaluation of the influences of social, political, economic, and professional issues on the delivery of nursing care, including:

  • Complex body structure and function
  • Pharmacology
  • Basics of medication administration

3. The third level provides essential training to meet the nursing needs of all patients throughout their lives, including:

  • Acute problems
  • Nursing skills for special populations
  • Data collection

There are an abundance of employment opportunities for practical nurses in nursing homes, doctors' offices, clinics, hospitals, and private homes.

According to the US Department of Labor, employment is expected to grow at a steady rate over the next decade in response to the long-term healthcare requirements of a rapidly growing elderly population, and the general growth of the healthcare field.
