The University of Miami is comprised of 14 schools and colleges
and offers a wide selection of academic disciplines, from
accounting to women's studies. The four campuses include Coral
Gables, UM's main campus, the Medical campus, located in downtown
Miami next to Jackson Memorial Hospital, the Rosenstiel campus on
Virginia Key, and the South campus in south Miami-Dade county.
As South Florida's first baccalaureate nursing program in 1948,
and the first in Florida to offer the doctorate in nursing in
1985, the School of Nursing has a history of leading the way in
nursing education. The School was one of the first in the country
to offer the nurse practitioner program in 1973. Two years after
introducing the master's in nursing in 1976, the School added
nurse midwifery and psychiatric-mental health nursing options.
The school is accredited by the NLNAC, and the Midwifery program
is accredited by the American College of Nurse-Midwives.
Traditional Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)

This program is designed for high school graduates attending
college for the first time or transfer students from other
educational institutions. The program requires a 4-year course of
study for the new high school graduate and a 2-year course of
study for the student transferring 60 credit hours.
The first 2 years of the 4-year program focus on general
education course work and pre-requisite courses for nursing,
particularly the sciences. The last 2 years of the program, for
both continuing and transfer students, consist of all nursing
course work.
Upon completion of the program, students graduate with a BSN
degree and will be eligible to take the National Council
Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses.

(For students with a non-nursing bachelor's degree and no
nursing experience. 1-year program)
This streamlined program is designed for individuals who possess
an undergraduate degree in a field other than nursing. The 1-year
(3-semester), full-time program begins in May and ends the
following May. Upon completion of the program, students graduate
with a BSN degree and are eligible to take the National Council
Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses.

This program is for individuals who have completed an
undergraduate degree in a field other than nursing who prefer to
complete their nursing studies over a 2-year period.

To facilitate career mobility for the Registered Nurse (RN), this
program allows the RN to complete the BSN in 3 consecutive
semesters (Fall, Spring and Fall). Classroom and clinical course
work are completed on weekends to accommodate the schedule of the
working RN. To be eligible for this program, students must have a
current nursing license in Florida.

Master of Science in Nursing
The MSN degree prepares individuals for a variety of advanced
practice nursing roles. Individuals choose among these clinical
specialties:
- Acute Care Nurse Practitioner
- Adult Nurse Practitioner
- Family Nurse Practitioner
- Nurse Midwifery
- Nurse Anesthesia
- Psychiatric Mental Health Specialist
- Women's Health Nurse Practitioner
Graduates of these programs are eligible to apply for licensure
as an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP) in the State
of Florida. In addition, they meet the requirements to write for
national certification examinations in the respective clinical
specialty. Full- and part-time options are available.
Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing (PhD)
The curriculum leading to the PhD prepares nurse scientists,
scholars and academicians who will contribute to the growth of
nursing research and education. Qualitative and quantitative
research methods are studied with a focus on promoting nursing
science through recognized methods of scholarship and inquiry.
The program meets all day on Fridays to accommodate the schedule
of working nurses. The doctoral program attracts a wide range of
students who work with a diverse faculty who are engaged in a
cutting-edge, multidisciplinary research.
Certificate Programs

The school's certificate programs facilitate career advancement
for nursing professionals. Programs are available as continuing
(CEU) credit or University credit applicable to an advanced
degree from the University of Miami School of Nursing and Health
Studies.
Education Certificate (15 credits)
This certificate program provides expert clinicians at the ASN,
BSN and MSN levels with the skills and resources they need to
become preceptors and clinical instructors.
Research Certificate (12 credits)
The Research Certificate is a basic and advanced research
programs introduce students to evidenced-based clinical practice,
research methods, and collection and interpretation of data.
