Excelsior College* - Advance Your Nursing Career, Without Missing a Beat at Work

If you're a working health care professional, Excelsior College - the world's largest distance educator of nurses - offers you everything you need to get ahead: important accreditations, advisors and learning resources, and degrees and certificate programs in some of the fastest growing health care fields. Plus, our School of Nursing has been named an NLN Center of Excellence in Nursing Education and has been designated "Best Nursing School for Men" by the American Assembly for Men in Nursing (AAMN).

How It Works

Apply to the Excelsior College School of Nursing. Once accepted, you'll enroll and receive an official evaluation of credits you have already earned. Then your academic advisor will develop a degree completion plan with you. You will meet general education requirements through a choice of credit-earning options, such as distance or campus-based courses, and by studying independently and taking for-credit exams, including Excelsior College Exams and CLEP.

Associate degree students fulfill the nursing component through Excelsior College Exams in nursing theory, plus the Clinical Performance Examination in Nursing. Bachelor's degree students complete the nursing component with a combination of Excelsior College Exams, online courses and a performance requirement, which they complete in their own communities. Our certificate programs and graduate degree programs are offered online.

Support Every Step of the Way

While Excelsior College is for motivated, independent learners, our nursing faculty and advisors are here to help you every step of the way, offering many guiding learning resources and online services. Plus, our students enjoy the support of our Electronic Peer Network, an online student community, and the Excelsior College Virtual Library. So it is no wonder that our designation as an NLN Center of Excellence is in recognition of our "creating environments that promote student learning and professional development."

Accreditation and More

Excelsior College is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. The associate, bachelor's and master's degree programs are accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC).

Excelsior College Examinations in nursing are the only nursing exams recognized by the American Council on Education (ACE). We are home to the Tau Kappa Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International, the Honor Society of Nurses.

  • Proficiency in the practice of professional nursing
  • A foundation for graduate specialization

The baccalaureate degree in nursing program began in 1976 and has been continuously accredited by NLNAC since 1981.

RNs start our RN-BS in Nursing program with 30 or more nursing credits, validated by successful completion of the NCLEX-RN. We welcome inquiries from currently licensed RNs.
