CSU Department of Nursing

The Department of Nursing faculty members are committed to preparing exceptional graduates who possess a sense of personal, social, and professional responsibility. The CSU Department of Nursing is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission, Inc. For over three decades, most African American nursing graduates earning baccalaureate degrees from public Illinois universities have graduated from CSU.

The CSU Department of Nursing offers the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree (BSN):

  • Entry-level BSN
  • CNA to BSN
  • LPN to BSN
  • RN to BSN

Nurses are intelligent, respected, knowledgeable, skilled and trusted professionals who promote health and provide care, adding quality to life from pre-conception through a dignified death. Nurses who earn the BSN position themselves to be of greater service to their communities and profession.

The following opportunities are open to nurses with a BSN:

  • Traditional clinical practice in various health care agencies
  • Work as a public health nurse or school nurse or in special areas of hospitals
  • Apply to graduate education programs to specialize in a practice area
  • With a Master's degree, become a nurse practitioner
  • With a Master's degree, become a nurse midwife or other nurse specialist

Nurses can work in any number of the following work environments:

  • Hospitals
  • Universities
  • Community-based agencies
  • Professional organizations
  • Non-traditional emerging fields
  • Nurse-initiated businesses

A BSN from Chicago State University provides an excellent basis to make such choices, enhancing opportunities to develop and take leadership to meet emerging health needs.

Students are admitted to the BSN degree program without previous nursing education, or can qualify for advanced credit with documentation of Illinois licensure as a certified nursing assistant (CNA), licensed practical nurse (LPN), or registered nurse (RN). Second degree students also are welcomed. At CSU students with the best pre-professional nursing records, who have been admitted into CSU, who have met all requirements, who apply and present documentation of credentials required by the Department by November 1 of the year before they seek to enter the January professional nursing curriculum sequence, are considered for admission into the professional nursing program. The process is highly competitive, and requires a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale to be considered.

Previous Nursing (CNA, LPN, or RN) Education Credit:
Students who are admitted to the professional phase of the CSU nursing program with Illinois licensure can get advanced placement. Students with Illinois RN licensure will receive 30 hours of nursing credits; with LPN licensure, 15 hours; and CNAs can receive 3 nursing credits, under the Illinois Articulation Initiative. LPN- and RN-recommended course sequences do not include summer courses.

Nurses who earn the BSN degree position themselves to be of greater service to their communities and profession as well as furthering their own careers. As a new BSN graduate, an RN has opportunities in hospitals, clinics, community-based agencies, professional organizations, and nurse-initiated businesses. Such nurses can enter graduate school in order to qualify to become nurse practitioners, faculty members who teach the next generations of nurses, or administrators or researchers in a number of areas. The BSN from CSU provides an excellent basis for graduates to make such choices and many others that a career in nursing enhances the opportunities to explore.
