The Marcella Niehoff School of NursingThe Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing has been successfully educating graduate nurses for more than 20 years. Loyola is the only Jesuit school to have a university medical center, and it is the largest of the Jesuit schools of nursing in the nation. The Niehoff School of Nursing, fully accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, was the first baccalaureate nursing program in Illinois. Master of Science in NursingThe Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) is designed to prepare professional nurses for advanced practice and leadership roles in health care delivery. The degree program includes nurse practitioner majors that prepare graduates for primary and tertiary health care, clinical nurse specialist roles in specialty practice areas, and the role of nurse administrators through the health systems management major. Class Times and LocationsMost courses are held at the Loyola Health System Campus in Maywood, IL. Courses are also offered at Loyola's Water Tower Campus on North Michigan Avenue, and Loyola's Lake Shore Campus on the north side of Chicago. Most courses meet in the evening with start times from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Some courses are web-based. Certification ExaminationsAll graduates will meet the requirements to sit for certification exams offered through either ANCC or AACN. PhD in NursingLoyola University Chicago's PhD in Nursing prepares nurse scholars who contribute to the body of nursing knowledge to improve the health of society. Graduates of the program are prepared to initiate a beginning program of research; expand nursing knowledge and assume leadership roles in nursing research, education, practice and/or administration. Graduates are prepared to participate in an international community of scholars and to further the Jesuit mission of knowledge development and dissemination in the service of humanity. The PhD in Nursing is conferred by The Graduate School. The PhD in Nursing program focuses on major areas of study: nursing science, preparation for the research role, philosophic and ethical foundations, academic and leadership roles and electives in a proposed area of research. In addition to course work, students are required to complete a scholarly dissertation. Both full- or part-time study is available. Full-time doctoral students with a master's degree can complete course work within 2 years. Full-time doctoral students with a bachelor's degree can complete course work within 3 to 3 1/2 years. Students must have a minimum of 64 semester hours to graduate, which may include advanced standing credits earned at the master's level. Classroom and online classes, as well as seminars, are offered. The program is offered in an academic year sequence as well as a concentrated summer format. Summer Session PhD ProgramThe PhD program summer concentration is targeted at faculty in schools of nursing who have not yet attained the doctoral preparation. Classes are sequenced in concentrated blocks to allow participation during summer and winter breaks in the academic year.
