The School of NursingBack to topThe School of Nursing at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville offers undergraduate and graduate programs in Nursing with classes offered on campus, online and at our newest facility in Springfield. The School of Nursing is home to the state-of-the-art Simulated Learning Center for the Health Sciences, a technologically advanced laboratory providing students with opportunities to learn in simulated settings. Students also learn clinical nursing skills at a variety of off-campus sites, including hospitals, nursing homes and home health care agencies in the Metro-East area, St. Louis, Missouri; and throughout central and southern Illinois. Our faculty also have advanced preparation in many clinical specializations and fields, including gerontological nursing, maternal-child nursing, medical-surgical nursing, mental health nursing, pediatric nursing and public health nursing, as well as nurse practitioner and nurse anesthesia. Faculty maintain an active role in clinical practice, research, scholarly inquiry and professional service. The SIUE School of Nursing has set the standard in the region by being the first to acquire adult and pediatric human patient simulators as the focal points of our psychomotor skills lab. For the 2004-2005 academic year, the School of Nursing ranks in the top 9% nationally of schools reporting NCLEX scores. AccreditationThe School of Nursing is fully accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE); the graduate specialization in nurse anesthesia is also accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Programs. Bachelor of Science in Nursing Option (for non-nurses)Back to topThe School of Nursing's Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Nursing for non-nurses prepares generalists in professional nursing; graduates are eligible to take the NCLEX-RN examination for licensure as a professional registered nurse. Nursing courses build on a foundation in the liberal arts and sciences and are concentrated in the last two years of study. Clinical and laboratory experiences are an integral part of the Nursing major. Post-Baccalaureate Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (for non-nurses)Back to topThe Post-Baccalaureate Accelerated Bachelor of Science Option allows students with a bachelor’s degree to attain a BS degree in Nursing in 16 months. It is an intense, defined curriculum with a combination of classroom instruction and clinical experiences. Upon successful completion of the option, students earn a BS degree with a major in Nursing and are eligible to take the National Nursing Licensure Exam (NCLEX) to obtain their license as a registered nurse. Master of Science in NursingBack to topThe Graduate Program in Nursing prepares nurses for advanced practice in seven areas:
Graduate nursing education emphasizes development of leadership skills and the expertise necessary to assume complex, specialized roles while providing direct and indirect nursing care to individuals, groups and families. We focus on knowledge of community resources and the aspects of primary, secondary and tertiary modalities in health care. Clinical experience in community agencies and hospitals is an integral part of the program. Knowledge and experience related to the advanced practice in nursing are incorporated into the program. Clinical practica are required and are individualized according to the student’s professional experience, interest and academic needs. Faculty act as facilitators while creating a supportive learning community. Full-time and part-time progressions are possible in all specializations except for Nurse Anesthesia. The student can choose to complete a thesis or a project to demonstrate basic research competence. Graduates of some of the specializations in the master’s program in nursing are eligible for certification examinations and for appointment to advanced nursing positions.
