Saint Louis University

A Catholic, Jesuit university, Saint Louis University traces its origins to the fall of 1818, when Rev. Louis William DuBourg opened Saint Louis Academy near the present site of the Gateway Arch on the St. Louis river front. Today, Saint Louis University educates approximately 11,000 students on its three campuses and offers a broad array of undergraduate, graduate and professional degree programs.

The School of Nursing

Saint Louis University School of Nursing has been a national leader in nursing education since it was founded in 1928. The School is located on Saint Louis University's prestigious Health Sciences Center Campus, which is directly across from Saint Louis University Hospital and Cardinal Glennon Hospital, two of 75 sites where students may complete clinicals. The School has a state-of-the-art clinical skills lab, state-of-the-art classrooms and lecture halls, complete computing facilities, and a Health Sciences Library and resources on its campus. Nursing faculty involve students in off-campus community health and wellness fairs and vaccine and flu clinics, which provides them with additional experience. The student-teacher ratio for clinical courses at the School is 8:1.

BSN Program

The School of Nursing offers the following programs of study leading to the BSN degree:

• Generic BSN Option (Four-Year Undergraduate)
• Accelerated BSN Option (One-Year Option for Persons with a Bachelor's Degree)
• RN to Master's Option (BSN Completion Option for RNs)

Special features of the BSN program include:

• In their final semester of study, students work one-on-one with a preceptor in a chosen area of nursing.
  
  
• Students complete a community project in which they work with other nursing students to develop and implement a program in the community.

In addition, area health care systems and hospitals offer a nursing student internship program for Saint Louis University nursing students during the summer following their junior year. Through this program nursing students may request to work with a preceptor. The hospitals provide an opportunity for the interns to continue working in their positions part-time during their senior year and after graduation to be employed in a graduate nurse position.

The Master of Science in Nursing program at Saint Louis University School of Nursing prepares RNs as advanced practice nurses through comprehensive coursework and practical experience in clinical settings.

Saint Louis University offers a variety of specialties and role preparations to meet the demands of today's healthcare providers and patient care needs. RNs enrolled in the MSN program take between 36 and 50 credit hours of coursework. The master's degree programs offer flexible, part-or full-time curriculum plans specifically designed for working RNs. Unique features of this program include:

• Fall entry available for May BSN graduates
• Post-master's certificate programs available in all specialty areas
• Ability to develop additional specialties through tailoring electives and clinical experiences
• Abbreviated program for BSN-certified nurse practitioners
• Option to emphasize research in any specialty area
• Faculty who are nationally recognized for teaching excellence, nursing leadership, scholarly research and student mentorship

At Saint Louis University, you may choose to pursue the Master of Science in Nursing degree or the Master of Science in Nursing (Research) degree. Students who choose the MSN(R) degree develop initial competence in conducting research through an additional thesis research experience. The School of Nursing also offers a joint Master of Science in Nursing/Master of Public Health degree for the roles of nursing specialist and family nurse practitioner.

Saint Louis University's Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing degree program is a comprehensive, well-integrated program that prepares RNs as scholars and skilled researchers. As part of the program, students develop and implement programs of research that ultimately help expand the knowledge base of nursing. In addition, students learn methods of analyzing health-related issues. The PhD program prepares RNs for a leadership role in clinical nursing and/or academic settings.
