College of Mount Saint Vincent

The College of Mount Saint Vincent is a four-year co-educational, liberal arts college located in Riverdale, New York. Overlooking the Hudson River, its beautiful 70-acre campus is just minutes from midtown New York City and all the excitement and opportunities it affords. Founded in 1847 by the Sisters of Charity, Mount Saint Vincent is a private, independent institution in the Catholic tradition.

Today, the co-educational College provides 1,500 full-time and part-time students, representing various religious, racial and ethnic backgrounds an excellent education. The cooperative program Mount Saint Vincent maintains with neighboring Manhattan College broadens the opportunities for students of both colleges through shared majors and resources. Small classes, the personal attention of a 13:1 student-faculty ratio and a faculty with both academic credentials and professional experience, all provide students with an exceptional learning environment.

The College of Mount Saint Vincent also has a location in Manhattan. The Mid-Manhattan site offers the BS in Nursing to transfer students with 60 credits or for students seeking a second bachelor's degree. The undergraduate nursing program prepares students to pursue a comprehensive study in the liberal arts and sciences with nursing theory and clinical experience leading to the bachelor of science degree. Its primary goal is to educate graduates to provide a wide range of professional nursing services to individuals, families and communities throughout the life cycle. The program provides the unique opportunity of a four-week preceptorship (supervised hospital clinical experience) during the final semester.

Mount Saint Vincent offers a traditional four-year undergraduate program leading to a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Nursing. Applicants must have successfully completed a secondary school program.

Transfer Applicants

Transfer applicants with an associate's degree or completion of more than 60 credits are waived from the College's core courses with the exception of nine credits of the Core Enrichment courses. The basic nursing program may be completed in two years if the student has completed the following science pre-requisites: Chemistry I and II, Anatomy and Physiology I and II and Microbiology.

Second Degree Transfer Applicants

Transfer applicants with a bachelor's degree in a discipline other than nursing may receive up to 75 credits in transfer. The College's core courses and Core Enrichment courses are waived. The basic nursing program may be completed in two years if the following science pre-requisites have been completed: Chemistry I and II, Anatomy and Physiology I and II and Microbiology.

The Baccalaureate Program in Nursing for RN's is designed for RN applicants with an Associate Degree. A transfer student with an associate degree may receive 65 credits in transfer and must earn a minimum of 51 credits from the College of Mount Saint Vincent. RN students have the opportunity to take four graduate nursing courses (12 credits). The graduate credits will count towards both the baccalaureate degree and the master's degree.

The College of Mount Saint Vincent, Department of Nursing offers Master's degrees in the following concentrations:

• Adult Nurse Practitioner - 40 credits

  Upon completion of the program, graduates are eligible for certification as an Adult Nurse Practitioner in New York State, through the American Nurse Credentialing Center and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.

• Bridge Program

  RNs with a baccalaureate in a major other than nursing may be enrolled in the Graduate Nursing Program.

• Clinical Nurse Specialist, Adult and Aged - 37 credits

  This program prepares nurses as clinical specialists in advanced practice to care for adults and the elderly. Graduates are eligible for certification as an Adult or Geriatric Clinical Specialist through the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

• Family Nurse Practitioner - 43 credits

  Upon completion of the program, graduates are eligible for certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner in New York State, through the American Nurse Credentialing Center and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.

• Nursing Administration - 36 credits

  This 36-credit master's degree can be completed in two years of full-time study. Upon completion of the program, graduates are prepared for roles in middle management positions.

• Nursing Education - 32 credits

  Upon completion of the program, graduates are prepared for teaching positions in nursing programs and staff development.
