The University of Rochester

The University of Rochester, founded in 1850, is a private, coeducational institution that ranks among the most highly regarded universities in the country. A member of the prestigious Association of American Universities, Rochester offers degree programs at the bachelor's, master's and doctoral levels.

There are many factors that distinguish the University of Rochester School of Nursing from other educational programs, but one stands above the rest--our commitment to the unification model--blending nursing practice and research into every aspect of our educational programs.

The School of Nursing is part of the University of Rochester Medical Center, which includes the School of Medicine and Dentistry in addition to 750-bed Strong Memorial Hospital (including the Golisano Children's Hospital), a tertiary care hospital and the region's trauma center.

The School of Nursing includes a state-of-the-art Clinical and Educational Resource Center, with both a Simulation and a skills laboratory, and a computer laboratory. Students have access to the University of Rochester's extensive library collections, over 3 million volumes, 10,000 periodicals and a wide range of biomedical databases. The school programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education and registered with the New York State Education Department.

Both full- and part-time study is available.

Accelerated Programs for Non-Nurses

The year-long baccalaureate and 3-year BS/master's programs are designed for students who already have a baccalaureate degree in a non-nursing field.

RN to BS Program

This program is for registered nurses with a diploma or associate's degree who desire the baccalaureate (BS) in nursing. This program values and builds on the nurse's educational and practice experience and is offered in a modular format. Courses are primarily online and this part time program can be completed in 16 months if arts and sciences requirements have been met.

This program is for registered nurses who seek to broaden their skills and enhance their career mobility by completing the BS and NP masters programs. The program accelerates movement through the BS and MS degrees, with a savings of 20 undergraduate credits.

The masters degree program is designed to prepare specialists in selected areas of clinical practice. Each of the clinical specialties prepares nurses with advanced clinical knowledge and skills to assume leadership positions in nursing practice, education or administration:

• Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (Child/Adolescent)

One of our MS programs is non-clinical and is open to nurses and non-nurses with a prior baccalaureate degree: "Leadership in Health Care Systems"

There is also a Leadership MS program for RNs with a prior BS - the new "Clinical Nurse Leader"

The post master's program is a non-degree, certificate program for nurses with an MS in Nursing who are seeking Nurse Practitioner certification in New York and nationally.

This program is for highly qualified nurses with a bachelor's degree in nursing who are interested in an intensive, accelerated program simultaneously offering master's preparation in one of the specialty program areas and advanced research training at the doctoral level.

Doctor of Nursing Practice

The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program is designed to prepare nurses at the highest level for advanced clinical practice in a specialty practice area. The program prepares leaders who can critically evaluate the evidence base for care and facilitate the translation and integration of research into clinical practice, deliver such care, set health care policy, manage clinical care units and health systems, solve health care dilemmas, work skillfully as members of interdisciplinary teams, and reduce disparities in health care.

PhD Program

This program is for those who aspire to academic and research leadership roles within health care and educational settings. Registered Nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and social workers (all of whom have prior MS degrees) are welcome to apply for the PhD in Health Practice Research. Two centers of excellence--in aging and high-risk children and youth--provide outstanding collaborative opportunities for study and mentorship. Doctoral students may also pursue study in a variety of other scientific interests represented by the faculty.

The RN First Assistant (RNFA) program is designed to provide experienced perioperative nurses with the advanced preparation necessary to assume the role of first assistant.
